Ever wondered why a perfume smells different an hour after you spray it than it did the moment you put it on? That is not your imagination, and it is not the scent fading unevenly. It is how fragrance notes are built to work. Here is a simple beginner's guide to top, middle and base notes.
A perfume is not one single smell, it is a structure of ingredients layered to unfold over time. Perfumers describe this structure as a pyramid with three levels: top notes, heart notes and base notes. Each layer takes over as the one before it fades.
Top notes are what you smell in the first 5 to 15 minutes after applying a fragrance. They are usually light, bright ingredients like citrus, fresh herbs or green leaves, chosen because they evaporate fastest and grab attention immediately. They set the first impression, but they are not what the scent is really about.
Once the top notes fade, the heart notes take over, usually 15 minutes to an hour in. This is the true character of the fragrance, often built on florals, spices or woods. Heart notes last the longest of the three layers and are what most people mean when they describe how a perfume actually smells.
Base notes are the deepest, heaviest ingredients, things like musk, amber, oud, oakmoss and woods. They emerge as the heart notes fade and are what stays on your skin and clothes for hours, sometimes into the next day. Base notes are also what gives a fragrance its lasting power.
Our own Dark Aura is a good real world example. It opens with fresh fig leaves and citrus zest as top notes, settles into a smoky heart of fig tree wood, cedarwood and black pepper, then dries down to a warm base of white musk, amber and oakmoss. Read the full Dark Aura review for more.
If you only smell a fragrance for a few seconds on a card in a shop, you are only smelling the top notes, not the perfume's true character. Always test a scent on skin and give it at least 15 to 20 minutes before deciding, or try a 1ml tester for a day before committing to a full bottle.
